Quicktime Requirement to change camera settings

Jesse Dec 19, 2012 05:09AM MST

I got a Contour Roam as a gift, and was pretty excited to try it out until I found out that it was not made with PC users in mind.

I installed storyteller, and then tried to open it and it failed telling me that I needed to install quicktime.

I refuse to install quicktime, as I don't need or want to have a multiple movie playback software installed (and it is garbage). The storyteller app doesn't even accept quicktime alternative, which I was willing to try. So - aside from the fact that I have the QT codec, and am able to edit/watch .mov files, I cannot launch storyteller... which I need to change the device settings.

The camera/hardware seems great, but the fact that I cant access the camera settings without QT is a joke. Is there a workaround that I am missing? If not, what are the chances that the storyteller software be (vastly) improved to at least OPEN without requiring a physical installation of QT, and not just the codecs?

This almost stopped me from buying one.

But a little searching showed that the settings come from a file 'FW_RTC.txt' on the microSD card.

Thanks! Still though, it would be good if Contour would address this in their software... It would be very easy to fix and would make PC users happy.

Hi James,

The previous commenter is correct, you can configure the camera without Storyteller. We have considered a stand alone application, but there is not one at this time.

It doesn't have to be standalone, but it would be good if storyteller could run without quicktime. Its not that the codec is missing its that the software looks for a physical quicktime installation which is silly in my opinion. The vast majority PC users hate quicktime (and for a good reason)

Think of it like having a mac and having realplayer or windows media player forced on you. Nobody likes realplayer, and mac users probably hate windows media player.

What would be really cool would be to have the settings updatable from a website. Then it would work on all platforms(including smart phones <- big improvement) and could be made so that one JavaScript program would work for all cameras.
